Dear members,

Today it is my honor and pleasure to tell you about the most beautiful function there is, function four. As position four, also known as Commissioner of External Affairs, you are the point of contact for all our external contacts. And from the bookstore to our sponsors, there are quite a few. This may be scary at first. You feel intrusive, and perhaps even a little unwanted. What does a mature and highly professional organization have to do with a group of students?

But the great thing is; As a study association we are a gold mine for companies! We have a staggering amount of brain cells walking around (although fewer and fewer with every borrel). Brain cells with extraordinary chemical, pharmaceutical and analytical knowledge. Brain cells with immense lab and research skills. And most importantly for many companies: brain cells that are looking for an internship in the foreseeable future, and shortly afterwards, a job! Good and personal contact with these brain cells is literally worth gold for any high-quality organization. And this contact is exactly what we as a study association have to offer.

As Commissioner of External Affairs you are responsible for organizing these contacts. You ensure that expectations are properly set, that the students are enthusiastic and that everyone benefits in the end. Fortunately, you don't do this alone, the ExCie (Excursion Committee) also plays an important hand in this. As External Commissioner you will take a seat in the ExCie and help organize their educational events.

From a gold mine gold is extracted. As my chairman put it: “the fuel for the motorcycle on which our members navigate through their studies”. An important and necessary side effect of maintaining contacts; perhaps indicated in many package inserts as the most important therapeutic effect. However, please don't forget that without a relationship, there is no gold mine to mine. Just as money is a side issue for our contacts, it should be a side issue for us as well. This is the only way to build valuable and lasting relationships.

And building valuable and lasting relationships is something you are good at as a function four. Ask many former Commissioners of External Affairs about their doings during the introduction period; any member has been seduced. From public relations to internal relations, we seem to be able to help our Commissioner of Internal Affairs with that.

If it rhymes it's true; functie vier, commissaris bier. When maintaining relationships, drinks cannot be missed. At university, during drinks and COBOs, but also beyond. A wise speaker once answered my question about what the most valuable thing about his job was: “Zuipen”. After all, most of our relations have also been students themselves. Borrelen is analogous to networking, perhaps the most important skill you can learn during your studies.

Waerde leden,

Vandaag is het mij een eer en waar genoegen jullie iets te vertellen over de mooiste functie die er is, functie vier. Als functie vier, ook wel Commissaris Extern, ben je het aanspreekpunt voor al onze externe contacten. En van de boekhandel tot aan onze sponsoren zijn dat er behoorlijk wat. Aan het begin is dit eng. Je voelt je opdringerig, en wellicht zelfs een beetje ongewenst. Wat moet een volwassen en uiterst professionele organisatie nou met een clubje studenten?

Maar het mooie is; als studievereniging zijn wij een goudmijn voor bedrijven! We hebben namelijk een daverende hoeveelheid hersencellen rondlopen (hoewel dit er met elke borrel minder worden). Hersencellen met een buitengewone scheikundige, farmaceutische en analytische kennis. Hersencellen met immense lab- en onderzoeksskills. En voor menig bedrijf het belangrijkst: hersencellen die binnen afzienbare tijd op zoek zijn naar een stage, en kort daarna, een baan! Goed en persoonlijk contact met deze hersencellen is voor elke hoogwaardige organisatie letterlijk goud waard. En dit contact is exact wat wij als studievereniging te bieden hebben.

Als Commissaris Extern ben je verantwoordelijk voor het organiseren van deze contacten. Je zorgt dat de verwachtingen goed geschept worden, dat de studenten enthousiast worden en dat iedereen er beter van wordt. Dit doe je gelukkig niet alleen, ook de ExCie (Excursie Commissie) speelt hierin een belangrijke hand. Als Commissaris Extern neem je plaats in de ExCie, en help je met het organiseren van hun educatieve evenementen.

Uit een goudmijn wordt goud geput. Zoals mijn voorzitter uitsprak: “de brandstof van de motor waarop onze leden door hun studie navigeren”. Een belangrijk en noodzakelijk neveneffect van het onderhouden van contacten; in menig bijsluiter wellicht aangegeven als belangrijkste therapeutische werking. Vergeet echter alsjeblieft niet dat er zonder relatie geen goudmijn is om goud uit te putten. Zoals het geld voor onze contacten een bijzaak is, moet het dat voor ons ook zijn. Alleen zo bouw je waardevolle en blijvende relaties op.

En het opbouwen van waardevolle en blijvende relaties is iets waar je als functie vier goed in bent. Vraag menig oud-Commissaris Extern naar hun doen en laten tijdens de introperiode; enig lid is verleid. Van publieke relaties naar interne relaties, ook daar schijnen wij onze Commissaris Intern mee te kunnen helpen.

Als het rijmt is het waar; functie vier, commissaris bier. Bij het onderhouden van relaties kan borrelen natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Op de universiteit, tijdens borrels en COBO’s, maar ook daarbuiten. Een wijze spreker gaf ooit als antwoord op mijn vraag wat het meest waardevolle aan zijn baan was: “Zuipen”. De meeste van onze relaties zijn ten slotte zelf ook student geweest. Borrelen is analoog aan netwerken, wellicht de belangrijkste skill die je tijdens je studie kan leren.
